Fort Wayne's location at the meeting point of the St. Marys, St. Joseph, and Maumee Rivers has shaped its flood history since the fort that gave the city its name was built there in 1794. All three rivers can rise rapidly after heavy rain or spring snowmelt, and the city's flat terrain and heavy clay soils hold that water near the surface once it arrives. The March 1982 flood was severe enough that the city relocated some of the most vulnerable homes and businesses and built flood-absorbing parkland along the rivers -- work that still shapes how Fort Wayne responds to water damage today.
